Tell us about Prachi Gupta?

Are You Full-Time Writer? If not, what else get you occupied?
I have turned into a full-time writer now.
Why do you write? Any Inspiration(s)?
I never aspired to be a writer. I used to write small stories for fun. Just for me. ‘Accidentally Cupid’ was also a short story until my brother Sanchit found it while doodling over my laptop and urged me to finish it. The appreciation it received, motivated me to write more and now I have 3 titles to my name. The readers inspire me to write, it’s for them I write.
Describe the route to your first novel being published? how does it feel now?
After so many rejections, we were disappointed for a while but then a small publisher met us and in a short while we got a message from him that he liked the story but he has never published fiction. He was an academic book publisher and straight away refused to market it so, we settled a deal with him that he would print and edit the book at his cost. Rest of the work we would have to do ourselves. So, this way it turned out to be a self-published book. From writing, cover designing, marketing, and distribution, all was done by us. Then it clicked and finally, the hard work paid off and it now feels great to see it doing good.

What was your reaction when your debut novel was on the shelves?
It’s an unexplainable feeling when the first time you see your creation on the shelves. It just fills you with joy and lots of enthusiasm.
Which novelists do you admire (Indian and Foreigners both)? Your favorite novels are?
A. I read but not a lot. I have started reading more now as that’s how I can grow as a writer. For me, the writing style of JK Rowling, Sophie Kinsella, and Anuja Chauhan. As for my favorite books, whichever I complete fully becomes my favorite so, there are many.

Let us know about your Work(s) so far? Which is your favorite?
I have written three books so far.
Accidentally Cupid: it’s a rom-com with a unique set of characters who anyone can relate to. This one is for all the college romance lovers.
Not My Type of Stranger: Another rom-com but with a different storyline. It’s a story of a player and a beautiful girl next door.
That Feeling of Love: it’s an anthology of 10 short real love stories.
Of them 3, my favorite is Accidentally Cupid.
Have you always wanted to be a writer? (And was there a particular moment you thought, ‘I can do this!’?)
I never wanted to be a writer. It all just happened accidentally.
How difficult finding a publisher was? Did you take help of any agent?
A. Finding a publisher was the toughest task. I had absolutely no idea on how to get my book published. So, I googled on the net and sent the proposal to various publication houses. It was a big challenge to keep on going after several rejections for more than 6 months. For first time authors like me, it’s really difficult to grab reader’s attention and make a mark in this field but I believe that if you have a good story to tell, people will like it.
What is your take on ‘earning bread with writing’? How difficult or easy it is?
To be honest, earning from writing is a very difficult thing. The money flow is not regular as a 9 to 5 job. The royalty rates are also less. It’s kind of an investment. If your book does great you get love and motivation from the readers to write more. Plus, it takes a lot of effort and hard work to write a book.

What advice would you give to an aspiring novelist/authors?
I’m not a big fan of unsolicited advice myself. It makes me want to run the other way. But if I must, it’s –
keep reading and keep writing as much as you can.
